What a baby costs: the gear for the first year
The gear for the first year, added up from the catalogue: what you need before the birth, what comes around six months, and what depends on how you feed. Running costs like nappies and childcare aren't in it.
The total
Everything on this page: 1.429 € to 5.487 €
The low figure is the cheapest option on every line, added up. The high figure is the dearest. A stroller or a cot bought second hand pulls you towards the low end.
Before the birth
Stroller with a newborn setup, and its rain cover: 460 € to 1.359 €
Infant car seat: 122 € to 555 €
Sleep: cot with mattress, sheets, sleeping bag, thermometer: 190 € to 1.595 € (part estimate)
Changing: mat, first nappies, wipes, cream: 40 € to 212 € (part estimate)
Bathing: bath, towels, washcloths: 26 € to 119 € (part estimate)
Clothes in the first two sizes: 266 € to 554 €
Thermometer, nail scissors, smoke alarms: 26 € to 145 € (part estimate)
Hospital bag, and what you need after the birth: 224 € to 417 € (part estimate)Out and about: portable mat, spare outfit, muslins: 20 € to 80 € (estimate)
This is the newborn checklist in short. The newborn checklist guide has the same items one by one, with what to look for.
Around six months and later
High chair, from about six months: 19 € to 323 €First-aid kit and a first toothbrush: 16 € to 43 € (part estimate)
Furniture anchors and window locks, before crawling: 20 € to 85 € (estimate)
Next car seat, if the first is outgrown (not in the total): 230 € to 470 €
The high chair is the one big item here. Look for EN 14988 and a harness. Whether you need a second car seat this year depends on your infant seat's height and weight limits, so it isn't in the total. Don't buy one early just to reuse a base.
Depends how you feed
Bottle feeding: bottles, steriliser, brush, rack, first formula (not in the total): 64 € to 249 € (part estimate)Breastfeeding: bras, pads, milk storage (not in the total): 43 € to 125 € (estimate)
Breast pump, if you need one (not in the total): 30 € to 169 €
Add the line that fits how you feed. Advice on sterilising differs: the NHS says sterilise everything, while German and French guidance say hot water and washing-up liquid, or a dishwasher, is enough at home. Pumps can often be rented, so ask your midwife first. The formula here is the first tin only.
Not counted here
- Nappies and wipes after the first packs
- Formula after the first tin
- Clothes beyond the first two sizes
- Childcare
- Anything optional: a carrier, a monitor, a bedside crib, nursery furniture
These are things bought every week, or not bought by everyone. They depend on where you live and how you do things, and no single figure for them would be honest.
